Top 5 Cities to Visit in Mexico

Mexico is a great and popular travel destination. It’s a country full of vibrant cities with a rich history of culture, tradition, art, fashion, architecture, cuisine, and design. Mexico’s cities are a beautiful juxtaposition of indigenous culture, Spanish influence, and 21st-century modernity. These elements blend to create something unique. Let’s dive into what we consider the top five cities to visit in Mexico.

1. Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the most dynamic cities in the world and ranks with New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris. It sits directly on the site of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, so the roots of Mexico City are as old as Mexico itself. Today, the city is a mix of ancient Aztec ruins, ornate Spanish architecture, and 21st century design.

With more than 1,200 museums and galleries, dozens of neighborhoods, each with its flair, restaurants, world-class shopping, and Chapultepec Park, there is much to experience in Mexico City. Make sure to visit the heart of Mexico City in Centro Histórico, the boho cafés of Condesa and Roma, and the swanky shopping in Polanco. Also, make sure to visit the Mercado de San Juan or the suburb of Coyoacán, where artist Frida Kahlo spent most of her life, to get a real glimpse of the local life.

2. Oaxaca

Oaxaca is the state's capital of the same name and holds the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its history and cultural influence. It was an important city for the ancient Zapotec tribe before receiving its paved streets and colonial architecture under Spanish influence. The main church Templo de Santo Domingo overlooks the vibrant Centro Histórico.

Today, Oaxaca is the perfect meeting of old and new Mexico, with beautiful boutiques, sprawling plazas, narrow streets, trendy cafés, and lovely hotels. Ten minutes outside of town, you can find the archaeological site of Monte Albán, an important Zapotec city and one of the best-preserved ruins in Mexico.

3. Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the “second city” of Mexico and the country's second-largest city. It offers as much culture, cuisine, and cosmopolitan buzz as Mexico City but is much less chaotic and offers a slower pace alternative to Mexico City. Guadalajara is well known for its museums, theaters, legendary restaurant scene, and architecture. Tlaquepaque's suburb is known worldwide as one of the best places for handicrafts in Mexico. The state of Jalisco is always worth attending a live performance while in town to get in the right mood.

4. Puebla

Puebla is one of the largest cities in Mexico and is steeped in history and culture. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its magnificent colonial architecture, of which the cathedral is a landmark. There are 70 churches and more than 1,000 colonial-style buildings in the Centro Histórico. The best view is from the roof terrace of Hotel La Purificadora.

Puebla is also a great shopping destination, from Mercado el Parián for arts and crafts to Mercado La Victoria, a 19th-century market converted into a mall with luxury boutiques.

We recommend a day trip from Puebla to the town of Cholula with the great canary-yellow church of Virgen de Los Remedios atop the Great Pyramid of Cholula.

5. Cancun

Cancun is much more than just the hotel zone, it’s a vibrant metropolis, and it's located across the lagoon, just a short ride from the hotel zone. Cancun has a fine dining scene, museums, and a port. Mercado 23 or Mercado 28 are the perfect places to shop for handicrafts. However, most of the shopping is upscale and modern.

The city was built in the 1970s specifically for tourism, so it doesn’t have the historic charm of other inland cities. However, it’s a good base to explore the rich Mayan world that has existed in this part of Mexico for thousands of years.
